buddies

A much needed update!
I've been busy. Especially busy today, played at a wedding at the country club, then my regular tea-time booking, then I played at the Newhampton with the Archer Marriott Blues Band. Which I enjoyed much more than last time I played with them. . . because I played better, and line-up changes in the group meant I just liked the music better.
The small stage meant I was right on top of the drummer, but that was cool because I could get into the beat and my Hammond sounded great too. I'm so happy I'm getting to play it these days.
And we didn't have to do Mustang bastard Sally to get the crowd dancing. The sixties bluesy vibe did that enough.
Ahh . . a good night. Great to see my buddy Darrel there too.

Look at that cool cat! A southern hick who couldn't afford a decent meal a while ago, being the biggest thing in music and challenging Elvis' crown. .
He's a man amongst men. Mr Jerry Lee Lewis, in 1958, outside the Westbury Hotel in London. He came over from the states for a tour and it was cut short when the media found out he'd married his young cousin. It was one of the big scandals in rock history. It was also an important part in the whole mythology of 50's Rock & Roll, a mythology to which I subscribe to and enjoy with a passion.
Jerry Lee fans are meeting on the 50th anniversary of the tour (Saturday I think) at the hotel. Then they are having a Rock & Roll show later. And I love the idea of that. It's such a silly thing to do, yet it's so important in the lives of the sixty-something teddy boys who remember the short tour, and the younger fans who just dig the music.
I hope they have a great time.
I can't go, because I'm playing piano. So I won't be able to join in the fun and pay tribute to the amazing Jerry Lee Lewis in London. . .
(and do you see the irony in that last sentence? I'm reminded of Sonny Curtis' line "Buddy Holly lives every time you play Rock & Roll")

And here's another buddy, with a new buddy called Charlotte. Good work my friend!
