Last month, whilst in Austria I took a train ride into Hungary and spent some time in Budapest. How cool is that? The train was cheap, clean, efficient and comfortable, (we have so much to learn about public transport here in the UK).
Anyway, it was a top idea. I loved Budapest, (after I got out of the whore ridden, pissy smelling backstreets that is!). There's me on the left, wondering if I'm going to get mugged, shot,
murdered or merely maimed.
murdered or merely maimed. In Bram Stoker's Dracula (which I'd taken with me for a second reading), Jonathon Harker stops in Budapest and calls it the 'gateway to the East'. It certainly feels like that. Although only three hours from Vienna, it's a diffrent place altogether. Vienna is very European, but Budapest is more like Transylvania!Lots of Gothic spires, dark stone towers with gargoyles and carvings. It's almost a sinister place!
It's been a troubled City. The Museum Of Terror which I visited, Chronicles the evils suffered by Hungarians over the years in the name of Communism and Facism. At the top of Castle Hill you can look out over the City. It's very impressive!
